The 2008 Fairview Road Ranch Pinot Noir continues our tradition of marrying two of the most seductive clones of Pinot Noir in the Santa Lucia Highlands, Pommard 4 and 667. Each year, these clones create the most alluring wines of luscious fruit commingled with earthiness and spice. In 2008, conditions around the time of harvest remained mild. This provided another unusually lengthy and gentle period of ripening throughout the entire month of September. The 2008 vintage has a dark profile, but the wine is a bit less meaty overall than the 2007 vintage in a pleasingly paradoxical way. We fermented this wine with 5% whole clusters in the Pommard 4, which provides some intriguing attributes in the wine's earthier aspects.
Aromas of black raspberry with hints of freshly baled, sweet hay awaken your senses to the interplay between fruit, earth, and spice in this wine. Lush, dark flavors of wild berries envelop the midpalate. A dusting of baking spice and a trace of wet stone are revealed in the long, caressing finish. Representative food pairings: Lamb chops with fig confit, or lapin aux olives; a salade niçoise also pairs surprisingly nicely.
