Each year in the spring, Saralee hosts a vintners tasting at which we join a number of other winemakers back at the vineyard to taste 60 to 70 barrel samples from the previous year. It's a wonderfully collaborative time and an unparalleled opportunity to taste the amazing diversity in wines originating sometimes just a few rows apart. Our 2009 Saralee's Vineyard Pinot Noir comes from a tiny parcel planted with the 113 clone and a block of 23 clone just a few hundred feet away. The topography of much of the Pinot Noir planted at Saralee's Vineyard is relatively consistent, so clonal selections take on a special prominence here. In 2009, voluptuous dark cherry and other berry notes from the 113 block commingle with floral, slightly savory elements from the 23 block to produce a wine that is sensual and elegant.
Dark cherry, kirsch, and cola notes marry with a touch of gun-metal minerality and mint at the start. Warm notes of vanilla and baking spice complement these elements, which conclude in a suave and sensual finish. Representative food pairings: suckling pig, roasted duck, or Moussaka.
